Palimpsest of Water is a winning competition proposal for the reconstruction of the fountain at Kraków’s Main Market Square. The title refers to a palimpsest—a manuscript repeatedly written, erased, and rewritten, where traces of earlier layers remain visible beneath the present surface. The project interprets Kraków itself as a palimpsest shaped by centuries of transformations of its water landscape.

The sculptural form originates from the superimposition of historical maps documenting successive courses of the Vistula River and its former branches. These overlapping traces were translated into a contemporary bronze relief, creating a fluid topography that reveals the hidden geography embedded within the city’s urban structure. Rather than depicting a single historical moment, the fountain embodies the accumulated memory of water and the continuous process of change that has shaped Kraków over time.

Water gently flows across the patinated bronze surface and cascades into a shallow stone basin, animating the relief and emphasizing its connection to the riverine landscape that inspired it. Positioned within one of Europe’s most significant public spaces, the fountain transforms historical cartography into a contemporary spatial experience, inviting visitors to rediscover the invisible layers of the city beneath their feet.
